My kids love playing with legos – what kids don’t! However, as they’ve gotten older and want more advanced legos, they’ve lost interest in the large, duplo-sized legos. I normally would donate or toss something we don’t use anything but something didn’t feel right about throwing away perfectly good legos! I am so glad I held onto them because our preschool teacher gave us the idea of adding a fun twist to learning but repurposing our large legos to help with word building and letter recognition. Grab your legos and a sharpie and let’s get to word building!
On the large legos, write simple, single-syllable words. For example:Â
– 2 blocks: At, On, To, Go, Up
– 3 blocks: Cat, Dog, Dad, Hat, Hot, Car, Dot, Eat
– 4 blocks: Love, Tree, Feet, Hand, Head, Hair, Fast, Slow, Milk
On single legos, write single letters to match the larger words. For example:
– a, t, o (2 of these), g, c, d, h, r, v, l, e (2 of these), n, i, s, w.
*Make sure you make the large block and smaller coordinating blocks together or you might run out of small pieces to put letters on.
Have fun building words and recognizing letters!
